Tesla increases deliveries in the third quarter, but is not expected to reach the annual production target

The electric vehicle maker delivered more than 343,000 vehicles between July and September, the lower bound of the estimate. The American group’s production is also increasing, but insufficiently due to transport difficulties.

Deliveries from US electric vehicle maker Tesla picked up again in the third quarter, compared with the previous quarter, which was marked by the closure of its Chinese factory for several weeks.

The group led by Elon Musk delivered a total of 343,830 vehicles between July and September, according to a press release published this Sunday, an increase of more than 42% in one year and almost 35% compared to the second quarter. Although the quarter shows the return of an increase in deliveries, they remain, however, slightly below analysts’ forecasts, which had a range between 343,000 and 370,000 deliveries.

More than 50% increase in production for one year

The group also experienced an increase in its production, which reached 365,923 vehicles (+54% in one year) in the third quarter, almost 42% more than in the second quarter, but acknowledges that it is “more difficult to obtain the necessary amount transport capacity.

Investors will be disappointed with the number of deliveries made this quarter,” Daniel Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, said in a note. “However, we see this more as a momentary slowdown than the beginning of a landing in the pace of delivery.”

The group hopes to overcome transportation difficulties by having “a more balanced distribution of production between the different regions”, in particular since the opening of two additional factories earlier this year, in Berlin and Austin, Texas.

Objective of one and a half million vehicles produced in 2022

In April, Elon Musk had estimated that Tesla would increase the pace during the current year and expected to produce more than 1.5 million vehicles in 2022. In the first nine months of the year, production reached 929,910 vehicles, making it difficult to objective. achieve.

Last quarter deliveries could be solid and close to 475,000 vehicles”, however, estimated Daniel Ives.

With the exception of the second quarter, marked by the closure of its Chinese factory, Tesla has managed to increase its deliveries every six months since the start of the pandemic, while other manufacturers have slowed down and then sometimes closed factories, first to fight the spread. of the virus and then by the difficulties in the supply of semiconductors. The group is scheduled to publish its quarterly results on October 19.
