These 3 regions where you pay a lot of money for your motorcycle insurance

In 2022, the average price of a motorcycle insurance premium reached 623 euros on average in France, an increase of 6.9% in one year. But depending on the region, prices range almost from single to double from 481 to 834 euros. Explanations.

Biker wallets keep getting lighter and inflation is raging. The increase in the cost of raw materials and repairs weighed on the amount of the premium in 2022.

The national average to insure your two-wheeled vehicle now stands at 623 euros, compared to 583 euros at the end of 2021, 6.9% more, according to data collected by Assurland.com, the online insurance comparator. And this, despite a fairly positive road accident experience in 2022 (-7% of serious injuries in 2022 vs 2019 according to Road Safety).

“The price of some used models has skyrocketed, up to 25% for some scooters depending on the market. Repair costs are also increasing, as is the cost of materials. These elements weigh on the amount of the premium”, explains the Assurland report. .

Ile-de-France, the most expensive region

But the place of residence weighs heavily on the amount of the premiums. And in three regions, Ile-de-France, Corsica and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, prices skyrocket reaching 834, 772 and 766 euros respectively.

This is almost double the prices in Pays de Loire (481 euros), Bourgogne Franche-Comté (484 euros) and Brittany (485 euros).

“The traffic there is heavier than in other places, which creates a higher risk of accident. In addition, two-wheeled vehicles are parked more often on the street than in closed garages, a criterion that also weighs on insurance rates”, specifies Assurland.

Other criteria play an important role. Firstly, the displacement of the machines. Obviously, riding motorcycles between 125 and 600 cc costs much less than machines up to 1000 cc. Up, prices go down.

“The amount is set mainly based on the displacement of the engine and the accident rate linked to the machine, so the most powerful models are considered more dangerous and, therefore, it costs more to insure their owners,” the report indicates. .

Assurland recalls that young people with a license (A2) mostly buy motorcycles between 600 and 1000 cc: “Therefore, there are more ‘newbies’ in this range, which explains the higher price in this section.”

With the risk of theft and accidents, the type of motorcycle also plays a role. If a “basic” motorcycle costs 330 euros, it will be 689 euros for a scooter, 732 euros for a roadster and more than 1,200 euros for a sports car.

Women cyclists pay less than men

Age is also a determining factor. Youngsters are penalized for their lack of experience and perhaps for their recklessness on the handlebars of a motorcycle. They pay double the average premium, or 1,290 euros on average for those under 25 years of age. Under 30, the price is 849 euros. It goes to 619 euros up to 40 years, 481 euros up to 50 years, 426 euros up to 60 years and 355 euros above.

But here again there are disparities. In general, women will pay less than men, on average 571 euros compared to 628. The difference is almost 10%. Unfair inequality? Not at all, especially since since 2012, insurers no longer have the right to set the price according to gender. “Women drive less powerful models, and declare fewer accidents than men, specifies Assurland. 98% of female bikers have not declared any for 3 years, compared to 95% of their male counterparts”.

2 electric wheels

The removal of TSCA (Special Tax on Insurance Arrangements) for electric vehicles purchased between 2021 and 2023 also applies to motorcycles. Some insurers also grant an additional gesture for these zero emission vehicles.

The combination of these factors causes a fall in the average price of electric two-wheeled vehicles, generally 50 and 125 cc, which amounts to 400 euros compared to 623 euros.

Assurland.com points out that the electric trend is driven by Ile-de-France due to paid parking for thermal two-wheelers. The share of electric scooters is around 20% in this region, compared to 9% in 2019. Nationwide, the number of vehicles has doubled from 5% in 2019 to 10% in 2022.
