Rodrigo Ferreira da Silva: “I’m sure there will be a divestment in the parking garage”

How important is it, not only for you but also for Portugal, to be at the heart of European car distribution at a time of great uncertainty for the sector?

My Election to Governing Bodies and Vice-Presidency of CECRA [European Council for Motor Trade and Repairs], with the responsibility of the division representing all car dealers in Europe, is a challenge that is not without some concern. We live in a very demanding time for all sectors of the economy, and especially for the automotive sector. CECRA is a European council that brings together several associations and represents distribution, retail, dealers and independent repairers, ie all aspects of this business. It has a team in Brussels that represents the legitimate interests of the activity to the European Commission, which functions as a guard dog of the industry.

Which are the main concerns of the different actors at European level?

All things that have to do with the connectivity of the car, with the information these cars release, who owns that information, and also with all this new mobility path and its implications. I am highly motivated to take up this challenge, which also relates to European consumers’ rights and fairer contractual relations between brands and dealers. We have to balance the balance, which is always much more on the side of the car industry. However, in Europe there are 12 million jobs in the automotive sector and only three million of these are in manufacturing. We sometimes have the idea that the industry is the largest employer in the automotive sector, but that is not the case. Without industry, of course, we have no product to sell, but there are still nine million jobs associated with trade, repair and logistics.
