In a context of rising prices, especially for food and oil at the pump, the political return to school is quite intense for the government. The Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, was invited to the set of BFM Politique to take stock of the various anti-inflation measures that the government has implemented in recent months.
“We kept our word on slowing down inflation”
“The French are lucid and are beginning to see their products fall,” says Bruno Le Maire, citing oil, pasta or poultry in particular.
In order to “definitively stop the inflationary spiral”, the Minister is pleased to have obtained from distributors and manufacturers the freezing of the price of 5,000 food products. “Concrete and tangible results obtained with Olivia Grégoire”, delegate minister in charge of Small and Medium Enterprises and Trade. Negotiations between manufacturers and supermarkets, which usually take place at the end of the year, have even been anticipated.
“The fall in prices must be immediate”
However, the effects of inflation continue to be felt on the shelves and Bruno Le Maire believes that “the fall in prices and the freezing of prices must be immediate.” According to him, from next week French households will be able to see a reduction in their income.
“You have to whistle the end of the recess”
At the moment there is no legal obligation for distributors and manufacturers in this regard, only their good will is questioned. “We control and there will be sanctions if the commitments are not respected,” says Bruno Le Maire, recalling that he will continue to resort to “name and shame” to accuse industrialists such as “Unilever or Pepsi & co if they continue without playing the game.”
The latter refers to a bill scheduled for next October to advance trade negotiations “that were to end last March.” “The legal obligation is necessary in this confrontation in which everyone passes the ball […] You have to whistle the end of the recess”, he qualified.
