Several newspapers increase their prices to start 2024

Several major media outlets, including Le Monde, Ouest France and L’Équipe, increased their prices at the beginning of 2024, as a result of inflation, ahead of a year rich in political and sporting events.

Le Monde, the most read national newspaper according to the ACPM, has been sold since Tuesday at 3.60 euros, an increase of 20 cents compared to 2023, while the Saturday edition remains at 3.40 euros.

The evening newspaper, as it is called, is not the only one raising its prices. Other titles such as Ouest France, Les Echos, La Croix, L’Équipe and ten newspapers owned by the EBRA press group have also increased their prices.

The coverage of the elections in the United States and the European Union, as well as the Paris Olympic Games, also forced the newspaper to modify its prices, the leaders continue in their message.

Same trend at Échos (LVMH group), in particular due to the increase in distribution costs, according to an internal source. It costs 3.60 euros to buy a copy from Tuesday. However, there are no changes for the weekend edition or for Le Parisien, the group’s main value.

Energy, paper and distribution costs.

La Croix (Bayard Presse) is also up 20 cents since Tuesday. As for the sports newspaper L’Équipe, the issue costs 2.40 euros instead of 2.30 euros. The weekend offer is also 20 cents more expensive: 3.50 euros with the weekly magazine and 4.80 euros with the France Football magazine and supplement.

The regional press is not spared: Ouest France, the most read regional newspaper, will increase its copy by 5 cents, due to the “economic consequences of inflation.” On its website, the group’s title Sipa-Ouest-France cites the rising costs of home delivery and a necessary increase to “remain firmly attentive to the territories.”

Seven of the ten newspapers owned by the press group EBRA (Crédit Mutuel) are also revising their prices upwards from now on, reflecting the costs of energy, paper and distribution. L’Est Républicain, Le Progrès, Le Bien Public, Le Dauphiné Libéré, les DNA, l’Alsace and le Journal de Saone et Loire: all increase their price by 10 cents, or even 20 cents, depending on the purchase of an issue with or without supplement. By January 2023, the price of most major French newspapers had already increased by between 10 and 20 cents due to rising paper prices.
