The pending political situation, marked by Emmanuel Macron’s consultations, is worrying. The employers’ association, on the occasion of the start of the Medef school year, had already been frank about it BFM Businessnoting that the situation could, however, quickly return. The French population in general is also pessimistic about the economic outlook induced by this wait-and-see attitude.
These are the conclusions of a new study published by Odoxa, with Challenges AND BFM Business. 72% of French people consider the situation “worrying” from an economic point of view.
In detail, a quarter consider it “very worrying” and 47% “quite worrying”. Among the optimists, only 4% consider it “not worrying at all” and 23% “not worrying at all”.
Consequences for businesses, but not for employment
And if this uncertainty were to continue, the French would be inclined to worry about businesses: 74% believe that “this would have consequences” on foreign investment in the country, and 64% on “the situation of businesses” – without further clarification as to what this means.
Paradoxically, respondents are less worried about employment in France (58%). Curiously, the majority consider that this would not affect their personal economic situation (only 41%). Self-employed workers (52%) and lower-income employees (57%) are the most worried. Many therefore think that employment would be affected, but not their own.
From a methodological point of view, the study was carried out on 28 and 29 August, among 1,005 representative French people. The margin of error in this configuration varies between approximately 2 and 3%.
