Safran will create a maintenance workshop for its Leap engine in Morocco

This new 25,000 m2 workshop will be located in the Casablanca airport area. It will be accompanied by the creation of around 600 direct jobs between now and 2030.

French aircraft engine and equipment manufacturer Safran will establish a maintenance and repair center for its flagship LEAP engine in Casablanca, Morocco, as part of a memorandum of understanding signed on Monday with the Moroccan government.

The construction of this new 25,000 m2 workshop in the Casablanca airport area “is part of a major investment plan to develop the global maintenance and repair network that supports the growth of the LEAP engine fleet,” underlines Safran.

600 direct jobs by 2030

LEAP, a next-generation and more fuel-efficient engine, equips most of the new generation single-aisle aircraft families, Airbus A320neo, Boeing 737 MAX and COMAC C919, representing more than 3,500 aircraft in service around the world, Safran said.

“I would like to thank the Moroccan government for its active support, as well as its effective support for our new maintenance workshop project, which reinforces Safran’s strategic presence in Morocco,” underlined Jean-Paul Alary, president of Safran Aircraft Engines.

The new headquarters will be accompanied by the creation of around 600 direct jobs between now and 2030, according to the same source.

Ultimately, it will have a maintenance capacity of 150 engines per year and will cover the high demand for LEAP maintenance, particularly for airlines located in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Safran has been present in Morocco for 25 years and employs around 4,700 people spread across 8 companies or joint ventures. Like other aircraft engine manufacturers, Safran sells its engines at a loss for long-term profitability and derives most of its revenue from after-sales services and maintenance.
