We know: winter tends to bulk up our suitcases, with thick sweaters and scarves or bulky ski clothes. Therefore, luggage can become heavy and take up space very quickly.
“We’re big, it’s okay!” says Anaëlle, who returns to France from Germany for the holidays, with only one suitcase of the right size. In fact, in February 2024, the SNCF introduced new luggage restrictions: each passenger can carry two large bags (70x90x50 cm) and one hand luggage (30x40x15 cm).
Special luggage such as strollers, skis, bicycles, scooters, musical instruments or wheelchairs are still allowed, but under special conditions.
Fine of 50 to 150 euros
In case of non-compliance with this new luggage policy on board trains, the fine is 50 euros (if carrying excess luggage) and even 150 euros “in case of obstructing traffic in the corridors, in case of improper occupancy of a seat or luggage area.
“I sent them via La Poste,” a passerby at Montparnasse station explains to BFMTV. “There are luggage racks on the platforms. [des trains]”This is not enough and we must create additional spaces now,” demands Michel Quidort, president of the National Federation of Transport Users (FNAUT). “People travel a lot for pleasure, not everyone travels with just a briefcase or a computer.”
The latter maintains that these spaces should also benefit families traveling during the Christmas season. Meanwhile, given the exceptional influx of travelers to the station during the end-of-year holiday period, it is best to make sure you are within the standards to avoid unpleasant surprises.
