Mayotte: Emmanuel Macron announces a “compensation fund” for the uninsured

The Head of State announced the creation of a compensation fund “to support those who are not insured.”

Emmanuel Macron this Thursday rejected accusations of “resignation” of the State in Mayotte in the face of the devastation caused by Hurricane Chido and announced that the uninsured would benefit from compensation. “I cannot allow it to be said (…) that the State has resigned here,” he said upon discovering the damage in a district of Mamoudzou, capital of the department.

According to a report from the general inspection of services from 2020, “only 6% of households insure their home” in Mayotte and “only the richest tend to take out insurance.” This figure is much lower than the average for Overseas (approximately half of the insured population) and France (96%), according to a report from the Central Reinsurance Fund (CCR) in May.
