The Amsterdam reviews have arrived and critics are divided over David O. Russell’s star-studded film

With a big name like David O. Russell at the helm and a ridiculously stacked cast that includes John David Washington, Christian Bale and Margot Robbie, among many others, it’s impossible not to be intrigued by amsterdam. Details about the mystery / comedy / thriller (Russell’s first film since 2015) have been kept under wraps for some time. But being the film one of the big releases this fall His critics had the opportunity to screen the film and give us a better idea of what lies ahead.

what we know amsterdam This story revolves around the three main characters, a doctor, a nurse and a lawyer, who become suspects in the murder of United States Senator Bill Meekins. The supporting cast includes the likes of Chris Rock (who Christian Bale had to keep his distance on set), Robert De Niro, Zoe Saldana, Mike Myers, Timothy Olyphant, Taylor Swift, Rami Malek, and the list goes on and on. So let’s see what the critics say, starting with 24 News Bulletin’s review of amsterdam in which our Eric Eisenberg gives the film 3 out of 5 stars. He says it’s a fun cinematic experience, even on the razor’s edge of being too much:

Joking madness is the cornerstone of silly adventure, and that rumor is relentless even as the film veers towards some of the biggest themes in modern history. If it’s not for you, you’ll instantly shudder, but those who step aboard will find an entertaining albeit overcooked mystery that’s heightened by what at the moment seems like a seemingly endless stream of talented actors taking to the stage with each new plot development. .

by Travis Hopson drunk critics prices too amsterdam 3 stars out of 5, calling it “complex but fun”. This review says David O. Russell takes an already twisted storyline and fills it with flashbacks and an often nonsensical onslaught of characters, but ultimately tells a hopeful story worth watching. The critic says:

Amsterdam might be considered Russell’s most ambitious film, but also the most convoluted and, ultimately, the most promising. For the latter reason alone, it’s an easier movie to watch than the unique things he’s done before. But Russell also finds reason to rely on the power of true friendship and patriotism to win when evil strikes. It may take a winding and somewhat confusing path to get there, but it’s a lesson worth learning at a time like this.

Tessa Smith of nerd mom agrees that the story has potential, but argues that not even the A + cast can save it. This reviewer also calls the plot “convoluted” and states that the film fails to figure out which genre it wants to be, giving the film a 1 in 5:

Amsterdam never fully engages in any of these genres. [true crime, drama, comedy, social impact, war, historical, thriller] nor does it give them the time they deserve to complete their part of the story. This is a case where too many elements are thrown into a film that is too long, which is a shame because the premise is intriguing. The actors don’t know what to do with what they’re given, and everyone seems to have chosen another Amsterdam genre to hold on to. Because of this, hardly any of them feel like they’re in the same movie.

by Jeff Ewing Slash Film agrees with the previous rating, giving the film a 4 out of 10. This review also claims that the cast, while excellent overall, cannot save amsterdam of his “tonal chaos”, saying:

It’s definitely hard, even for such a talented cast, to salvage a narrative that can’t decide what kind of movie it’s trying to be. If you don’t know the goal, how can your performance achieve it? Although the actors are skilled and experienced, with no bad actors among them, the impact of their talent is muted in a film whose tone swings so wildly that it overshadows almost every aspect of the project.

Ian Freer from Empire rates amsterdam 2 out of 5 stars, saying the director wants to celebrate love, humanity and kindness, but the film needed more subtlety to be successful:

Amsterdam suffers from too many historical details without the vigor to guide you through them. It has nice protagonists and the art is perfect, but the result, considering all the talent involved, is a tonally embarrassing disappointment: a game that fails.

There definitely seems to be a lot of things going on in this film, but critics don’t seem to agree on how successful the final product has been in overcoming its flaws. If you want to change this movie, amsterdam will be available in cinemas from Friday 7 October.
