Military succession is assured. Buckingham Palace announces this Friday that King Charles III has just been appointed Captain General of the Royal Marines, at the service of the British Navy. A role that his father, Prince Philip, held for 64 years from 1953 to 2017.
“It is with the greatest pleasure that I assume the role of your Captain General,” King Carlos III said in a statement. “I am exceptionally proud to follow in the footsteps of so many members of my family over the last three and a half centuries. They have all taken on this role with deep admiration.”
The appointment coincides with the 358th anniversary of the Royal Marines, celebrated this Friday. King Charles served in this service from 1972, as part of his military career.
From son to father
Before King Charles, it was his son, Prince Harry, who inherited the title of Captain General of the Royal Marines on the death of Prince Philip on April 9, 2021. A position he left in February 2021, abandoning his prominent role within the royal family to settle in California with his wife Meghan Markle.
Once Prince of Wales, Charles became King Charles III following the death of his mother Elizabeth II on September 8. His coronation will take place in London on May 6, 2023.
