A dice The best films of Anne Hathaway this is The devil wears Prada where budding writer Andy decides to work as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, one of the toughest fashion magazine editors in the business. However, as Andy and Miranda’s working relationship grows stronger, his romantic relationship with her boyfriend, Nate, deteriorates. Years after The devil wears Prada came out, there was a backlash against Nate’s character, saying he’s the “real villain” in the movie, and Hathaway has something to say about it.
weekly entertainment collected tweets and other social media posts from fans saying Nate was the “real villain” of The devil wears Prada. They pointed out that he didn’t care about his girlfriend’s new job at the fashion magazine and didn’t understand her strenuous homework. During an interview in look what’s happening now Live with Andy Cohen, the actress gave her two cents on whether or not Nate had “real villain” status in the film.
I think they were both very young and they understood things and he was a kid, but I was also a kid in his twenties and I hope I got over that and I think that’s what we all do. I certainly don’t want to be defined by my worst when I’m in my twenties, so I don’t consider Nate a villain.
It is true that people are constantly changing. Maybe Nate wouldn’t like who he was with Andy if he thought back to that time in his life today. Andy certainly didn’t know what turn his life would take by working as Miranda’s assistant. That’s why it was a bold move at the end of the drama when Andy didn’t choose Miranda or Nate. She chose herself by starting a new chapter in her life and pursuing her new career in publishing.
Strongly negative views on Nate can be a bit one-sided. Obviously, it looks like Nate doesn’t seem to be supporting Andy, complaining that he’s not quite there for him. However, how The devil wears Prada the writer once replied about Nate , she was supposed to play the role of the “nagging wife” while Andy continued his career. It is a role we have seen played many times by women where the man moves on to a new job or hobby and the female interest complains. It reminds me a lot of Patrick Dempsey’s character in school movie liberal writers when he could not keep his wife’s teaching job and refused to be his “wife”. While characters like this act as an obstacle to the story, it would be nice to see both genders in this situation supporting their partner’s career.
When you look again The devil wears Prada , you can see that even though Nate lacks execution on his points, the message he is trying to convey comes from a good position. After all, Andy is simply using his work with Miranda as a stepping stone to his writing career. Being an assistant to a demanding fashion editor has never been a dream for her. I’ve seen her go from being a criticism of fashionistas one moment to being one of them the other. It is difficult for him to watch, which leads to anger and frustration.
Anne Hathaway forgave Nate’s character for how she was with her character throughout the film. Hopefully today Nate is still making those delicious late-night grilled cheeses and more supportive of his current girlfriend’s career.
