In 2005, Grey’s Anatomy was a surprise hit when he arrived as a mid-season replacement for boston legal in the ABC. Viewers fell in love with medical drama, in which secret connections were still as important as practiced medicine. Seventeen years later, the drama is a big moneymaker for the network in its nineteenth season, Shonda Rhimes is a household name and with a new class of interns giving the series a a breath of fresh air it does not seem Grey’s Anatomy go everywhere at any time. However, when the designer met with TV executives about the pilot, they told her they were sure it would fail.
Shonda Rhimes spoke on the podcast From 9:00 to 17:00 with the Skimm (opens in a new tab) on a nightmare meeting with network executives, and revealed why they didn’t think audiences would relate to the show. Rhimes recalled:
I remember being called into a room full of old men and led to say that the show was a problem because no one would see a show about a woman sleeping with a man the night before her first day on the job. . And they were serious.
Shonda Rhimes said she was horrified that these executives looked so out of touch, but it was they who made the decision. Although the hint that viewers wouldn’t tune in to the show just because Meredith Gray had a one night stand (or so she thought) Before her first day as an intern in surgery seemed insane today, the TV producer brought out everything she does with it. Grey’s Anatomy which at the time was not seen on television. She said:
It seems really obvious now, I think, but back then, you have to remember, there had never been a show on television where the main character possessed his sexuality. There hadn’t been a show where three or four black people were seen in a room talking, unless it was in a sitcom, with no one else in the room. You didn’t see a lot of the things we were doing and I didn’t really consider them revolutionary. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just doing a show that I want to watch.
Thank goodness too because it turned out to be a sight that many people wanted to see. Shonda Rhimes knows that part of her legacy It may be that she has involved more people of color in television acting jobs, and while it’s an admirable thing to be known for, the famous producer said she was really ashamed on television. Grey’s Anatomy pursues its mission of representation e address social issues but it’s crazy to think 2005 wasn’t that far off, and Rhimes said it shouldn’t have taken that long to include more diversity in the faces we see on our screens.
It may not have been the easiest path, but for my part, I’m happy with it Grey’s Anatomy aired I’d love to hear what these network executives have to say now about the show still going strong after 19 seasons. You can watch new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy at 21:00. netflix subscription .
