A three-year-old girl from the southwest of the Landes department died on November 28 of an invasive infection caused by streptococcus A, a bacterium responsible for a type of angina, reports France Bleu Landes. She was first treated at the Dax hospital before being transferred to the Bordeaux University Hospital Center (CHU) due to her worsening state of health.
A member of his siblings is also hospitalized in serious condition in Dax for the same infection. A third child is in the hospital with similar conditions. The latter is a schoolboy from the same sector as the brother and sister.
“In some cases, the disease can degenerate”
The Regional Health Agency (ARS) has issued recommendations to parents and medical professionals in the sector.
“In 99% of cases, there is no difficulty with angina. However, in some cases, the disease can degenerate and affect vital functions. This was the case”, stresses Didier Couteaud, the ARS representative in the Landes together with Blue France.
“We notify all families in the area and remind them that if there are symptoms linked to angina, they should see a doctor quickly,” he specifies.
The symptoms of angina (inflammation of the tonsils) are mainly “a throat pain causing difficulty swallowing and fever (between 38°C and 39°C). Other symptoms may also occur (cough, cold, digestive disorders, etc.)”, can be read on the Health Insurance website, which specifies that nine million people contract this disease every year.
In addition, strep A infection recently killed six children in the UK.
