“They didn’t notify any of us”: the socialists accused of wanting to move to retirement points

Rebel France, furious to see its partner in the New Popular Front, the Socialist Party, negotiate with the government over the budget, accuses it of wanting to abandon pay-as-you-go retirement and move to a points-based retirement system.

Olivier Faure spoke on Thursday on TF1 of the need for new negotiations between the social partners on the financing of pensions to “move from one (pension) system to another.”

He wants to abandon the pay-as-you-go pension and move to a point-based pension, “one of the liberals’ key points,” Jean-Luc Mélenchon denounces on Friday in his new blog entry.

“In the simple vocabulary of political and union activists, saying ‘move to another system’ in terms of pensions is equivalent to a slap in the face,” says the rebel tribune.

“They didn’t warn any of us.”

“The method of the socialists is shocking because they did not warn any of us of their turn on this issue,” he emphasizes, stating that it is about “destroying the Social Security system.”

The three-time presidential candidate adds “with satisfaction the reactions of the PCF and the EELV to the change of course of the PS on pensions. They remain faithful to the program that we signed together.”

“No, we are not in favor of a point-based retirement system, but rather a pay-as-you-go system. It is fake news,” PS general secretary Pierre Jouvet responded to AFP.

The coordinator of France Insoumise, Manuel Bompard, also accused the leader of the socialist senators, Patrick Kanner, of

“We must look at the relevance” of the withdrawal of points

This point-based retirement system, which the PS has always opposed until now, “we must examine its relevance with the social partners,” explained Patrick Kanner on Franceinfo.

“We are ready to study all alternative solutions. I cannot tell you that we will be in favor of them, but we are ready to look for them with the social partners,” he added.

Socialist deputy Jérôme Guedj also stated on Sud Radio that the issue of point-based retirement should be “put on the table” in negotiations with the social partners.

During his first term, Emmanuel Macron considered changing the current retirement system, based on pay-as-you-go (those who work contribute for those who have worked), towards a points-based retirement system. It was adopted by 49.3 before Covid 19 stopped it in its tracks.
