Zelensky says 2030 World Cup bid is ‘more than a symbol of faith’ in Ukraine’s victory

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that Ukraine’s joint bid with Portugal and Spain to host the 2030 World Cup is “more than a symbol of confidence in our joint victory”.

“Ukraine will resist, triumph and be rebuilt thanks to the solidarity of its partners. Grateful to Spain and Portugal”, Zelensky wrote on Twitter about his war-torn country.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa believed that Ukraine’s participation in Portugal and Spain’s candidacy for the 2030 World Cup is another gesture of solidarity with that country, but also strengthens the Iberian claim.

The president of the republic was questioned by journalists in Malta – where he will participate in the 17th meeting of the Arraiolos group – after it was made official that Ukraine will join Portugal and Spain in a joint effort to host the Mundial2030 of football.

The Portuguese head of state stressed that the idea of including Ukraine “started from the Portuguese Football Federation”, and was welcomed by international bodies, pointing to two objectives.

“On the one hand, it strengthens solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. Second, it strengthens the Portuguese and Spanish candidacy at a time when other candidatures are being outlined and that has been taken into account,” he said.

The President of the Republic has indicated that at the time of implementation “the largest number of games will be in Portugal and Spain”, but “as far as possible” games will also be played on Ukrainian soil. “We are still many years away from 2030,” he emphasized.
