Ukraine joins Portugal and Spain in battle for 2030 World Cup

Spain and Portugal’s joint bid for the 2030 World Cup has a surprising last-minute partner. According to British newspaper The Times, Ukraine joins Iberian candidacy to host the World Cup, with a symbolic participation allowing it to add its name to those of Portugal and Spain.

According to The Times, the measure was approved by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Portuguese and Spanish governments.

Under this plan, Ukraine, which is currently at war, would host one of the tournament groups.

According to the first known information about the Iberian candidacy, Portugal would have three stadiums and Spain would contribute eleven. Plans to be revised now if the application also includes Ukraine.

On Wednesday, the Iberian bid for the 2030 World Cup will present the new partner to UEFA, in Nyon, during a visit by Portuguese Football Federation presidents Fernando Gomes and his Spanish counterpart, Luis Rubiales, The Times adds.

The weight of the candidacy will continue to fall between Spain and Portugal, but the symbolic inclusion of Ukraine will allow to gain sympathy with the idea of rewarding a people severely punished by the Russian invasion.

Nevertheless, the plan is subject to the end of the war and the reconstruction of Ukraine, which hosted the Euro 2012 together with Poland.
