Every year we wonder what the new “wow effect” will be among televisions. If Samsung has often played with size and technology to stand out (mini LED, QLED, 8K, gigantic diagonal, etc.), LG shines, for its part, with prototypes that often look like technological demonstrations from the LG Display division.
Paper-thin displays that roll up into a sideboard and unroll from the ceiling: this year, LG once again has a surprise up its sleeve: a shelf with a 77-inch 4K transparent display.
Last year, the South Korean manufacturer already presented transparent screen models, but they were mainly intended for companies and LG considers that the market until then was not prepared, or not willing, for this type of products.
A piece of furniture to let the TV disappear
The LG Signature Oled T is thus integrated between the shelves and the whole is very elegant. If the television is not designed to integrate into the decoration, it knows how to be very discreet. This large Oled panel will emit the requested image like a classic television of excellent quality. But suddenly, using the remote control, the dark background can be lowered like a mechanical shutter, leaving the TV transparent.
It is quite impressive and the result is surprising. Therefore, it is not surprising that prominent actors, singers or other personalities appear. However, everything looks natural, while the screen can reveal your hand if you pass it behind the “open” screen.
But the LG Signature Oled T is not just a television. It is based on a particular version of LG’s WebOS interface to make it more instinctive and able to follow our desires. In particular, it offers several wallpapers that can transform your TV into an aquarium full of fish. This way, information (traffic, news, weather, etc.) can appear in the wide black border at the bottom. This houses both the sound bar and a possible information banner. The information you want will be displayed above.
And then the transparency on the screen can also play with the weather. Depending on the weather of the day, your TV wallpaper may change to a windy, sunny or rainy environment around a tree to indicate the changing weather outside.
Hassle-free and wireless
Shown for the first time to the press, the LG Signature Oled T is surprising. Especially when you put your hand behind the screen to see it appear in the middle of a movie scene or an artist’s singing turn. In fact, it is quite surprising to see that the display technology and the help of the internal processor allow you to see the displayed elements in depth as if there was a real background in the image. At any time you can turn it back on using the remote control. The transparency effect will simply be less marked.
To push transparency to the limit, LG obviously thought about eliminating any unsightly cables around the screen. Like the LG Signature TV introduced last year at CES, the Signature Oled T has no visible cables. All of them are grouped in a remote box, which can be located a few meters from the screen.
It is this TV Box that contains the different connections that we are used to finding on a screen. This allows you to keep it away from furniture and let the screen disappear into the furniture. And this is perhaps its way of differentiating itself from the new Samsung television.
Samsung shows courtesy towards LG
Therefore, the LG Signature Oled T claims to be the world’s first transparent and wireless 4K TV. It must be said that Samsung pulled the rug out from under it by introducing its transparent screen the day before.
Although they start from the same starting point, the two products quickly differentiate themselves in terms of design and screen choice. Samsung has also relied on transparent micro LEDs to design its first ultra-thin model. The company claims this makes its products brighter and more colorful.
And like LG, Samsung’s revolutionary television currently has no price or release date. But Samsung’s micro LED televisions, even before being transparent, are giving their range a twist. With almost equivalent capabilities, a non-transparent micro LED TV currently costs $150,000.
