This year, the Seoul-Las Vegas flights are sold out for CES 2024. No less than 700 companies, universities and public institutions, including 550 startups, headed to Nevada (remember that France has a delegation of 150 young people on shoots), in the wake of Korean technology giants including Samsung, LG, SK Group or even automakers Kia and Hyundai Motors or their industrial counterpart HD Hyundai.
K-startup, the Korean counterpart of the French technology label
The Minister of SMEs and Startups, Oh Young-Joo, is there, as in a few hours he will inaugurate the K-startup pavilion in Eureka Park, the place dedicated to young companies at CES. To illustrate this strong presence, 116 companies proudly display the innovation trophies awarded by the CES on their stands, of which only 15% are more than 7 years old. They are present in all sectors, from fintech to mobility, including cyber, robotics and of course artificial intelligence. There are many unknowns for us, including: Banf, K-Rangers, Lordsystem, Gole Robotics, Sheco and DeepX, an AI chip specialist who seems to be the star of this show; We find this technology in smart cameras, mobility platforms or robots.
Because it is also in this sector where Koreans seek to shine. Although they themselves are going through a turbulent period with their northern neighbor, they sense that their other, more distant neighbor and competitor, Taiwan, is preparing for turbulent times, an opportunity for them to catch up in the field of semiconductors. Hence the offensive carried out by companies such as Chips & Media, AI components intended for cloud platforms, or even Panmesia, specialized in memory chip architecture.
With virtual reality appearing among the strong trends at the fair, South Korea is promoting its RebuildAI foal, a technology that allows you to create 3D content from photos or videos taken with your smartphone. Libest, for its part, offers flexible lithium-ion batteries for augmented reality glasses.
AI at Samsung and LG, smart vehicles at Kia and Hyundai
Finally, a CES without Samsung innovations would not be a successful CES. The giant of mobile phones, processors and screens will present its latest transparent television technologies, but experts especially expect announcements in the field of generative artificial intelligence. Han Jong-Lee, one of Samsung’s leaders, is expected to present Samsung’s vision on AI, a highly anticipated speech, since the Korean has remained quite discreet for the moment about his plans in this area. AI will also be on LG’s menu in all the innovations presented around the smart home and smart displays. Last word on Samsung and its partnership announced here with Tesla on smart energy management… at home.
Sustainability will once again be in mobility this year thanks to the manufacturers KIA and Hyundai. The first will present five models of autonomous electric vehicles and plans to accelerate its offensive in this area until the second half of 2025. The second wants to make a strong impact, in particular with the presentation of utility or transport vehicles that run on hydrogen. He is also expected to make a splash with his Supernal flying robot taxi.
Sustainable mobility is also on the agenda of the SK Group, which presents chips and batteries dedicated to this environment. The Korean industrialist also wants to mark the CES with his presence with the arrival of its president Chey Tae-Won, normally much more discreet.
