Swiss president announces surprise departure from government duties at the end of the year

The President of the Swiss Confederation, Alain Berset, who is also the Minister responsible for the Interior and Public Health, announced this Wednesday that he will end his government duties at the end of the current year, an announcement that was met with surprise in Switzerland.

“At the end of this year, I am not running for another term in the Bundesrat. After 20 intense years in federal politics, 12 of them in the Bundesrat, and after managing the covid-19 crisis, it is time come give this step,” announced the 51-year-old manager on his official account on the social network Twitter.

Berset had assumed the rotating role of president of the Swiss Confederation for a second time on January 1 this year, and this month had said he would seek re-election following national elections scheduled for October, when he stated to the Swiss public television channel SRF that “there is still a lot to do” and had “very large files on the table that I would like to finish”.

In Switzerland, the presidency rotates among the seven government ministers (the Federal Council), who continue to fulfill their ministerial duties while fulfilling the role of president of the Confederation.

In addition to presiding over government meetings, the president also represents the Confederacy institutionally internally and internationally.

Alain Berset, who was already president in 2018, is one of the most controversial figures on the Swiss political scene. .
