“No one will dictate their position to France”: the government’s response to Israel about the recognition of the Palestinian State

Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barot, said Tuesday in the National Assembly that France “believes in a sustainable political solution for the region”, both in “the interest” of Israel and for the Palestinians.

“No one will dictate their position to France” about the recognition of a Palestinian State, launched on Tuesday, May 13, the Chief of French diplomacy, in response to his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar, who recently threatened with “unilateral measures” the countries that would take this election.

“France will do this because France believes in a sustainable political solution for the region, for the sake of the security of Israel as in the interest of the security of the Palestinians,” said Jean-Noël Barrot during the questions in the National Assembly.

Possible recognition “in June”

On April 9, Emmanuel Macron announced that France could recognize a Palestinian state “in June” on the occasion of a conference that will coincide with Saudi Arabia in New York.

“We have to go to recognition and, therefore, in the coming months we will go,” he explained in an interview with the Canal de France 5, awarded to his return from a trip to Egypt. “Our goal is somewhere in June, with Saudi Arabia to preside over this conference (in Palestine, editor’s note) where we could finish this movement of reciprocal recognition of several,” he said.

Already in February 2024, The Head of State He had said that “the recognition of a Palestinian state is not a taboo for France”, believing that “we owe it to the Palestinians, whose aspirations have been trampled for too long.”

147 of the 193 UN countries recognize the state of Palestine. In May 2024Spain, Ireland and Norway have formalized this approach, which leads to 10 the number of members of the European Union who have granted recognition.

In April 2024, the United States vetoed Palestine’s admission as a member state as the right to the UN. And in May, a spokesman for the American presidency said that former President Joe Biden opposed a “unilateral” recognition of the state of Palestine and that he estimated “that a Palestinian State must be created through direct negotiations between the parties.”
