Block in Switzerland: the missing man was not found, suspended research

A 64 -year -old man still disappears this Thursday, May 29, after landslide from a part of the birch glacier in the town of Blatten, in Switzerland, the day before. The investigation has been interrupted.

The investigation to try to find the missing man during the sliding of a part of the birch glacier in Switzerland on Wednesday, May 28, was not successful. 64 years and originally from the region, it was not found.

The authorities said they had suspended the investigation because the pile of ice, rocks and fallen lands was too unstable. New landslides or landslides, hence this decision is not excluded.

For the same reasons, the authorities are happy, for the moment, to observe the situation and analyze the different scenarios, before being able to act. Little more than 50 soldiers are on the site and are ready to intervene, said the army at a press conference held this Thursday, May 29 at the beginning of the night.

An artificially concerned lake to the authorities

The people of Blatten are almost completely covered by landslide, but also by an artificial lake that has formed. In fact, the Lonza River that crossed the town is blocked by three million m3 of rock, ice and earth, which avoids its flow. The images are impressive.

The question now is whether all this water can happen on the mound or, what is worse, if the latter can break suddenly under pressure.

At the moment, specialists believe it is “unlikely”, especially because the Ferden dam, which is close, and that has been emptied, “the damping zone.” However, such scenario is not completely excluded. “There could also be a cannon that is formed in this mound,” the authorities say, which are preparing for the worst.

Other evacuations are possible

The inhabitants of the Blatten village had been evacuated preventively, 10 days ago. After landslide, another 16 inhabitants of the Valley also had to leave their accommodation. Other people could be evacuated, especially during the night “if the situation deteriorates.”
