Hong Kong was beaten by powerful winds and heavy rains this Sunday, July 20, while the typhoon Wipha passed along the southern coast of China, causing the fall of trees and the collapses of scaffolding. Wipha was about 140 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong around 5 pm Los Local, said the city’s weather observatory.
The highest alert level for tropical cyclones (“T10”) was activated for approximately 7 hours, but was lowered to the “T8” level, the most important third, when the Wipha moved away from the city.

“Southeast winds ranging from the wind to storm types still affect certain parts of the territory sometimes,” said the observatory. “Wipha’s intense rain persistently affects the surroundings of the Pearl river estuary,” he said.

Closed schools and nurseries
The neighboring city of Macao, known for its casinos, has issued its own Typhón warning to the maximum of the afternoon, the authorities that suspended all public transport services. The Chinese provinces of Hainan and Guangdong were also previously alerted, according to the official agency of China Nouvelle on Sunday.

A representative of the Hong Kong airport authority said on Sunday earlier that around 500 flights had been canceled due to bad weather, while around 400 others should take off or land later in the day.
More than 200 people found refuge in temporary accommodation centers administered by the Government. The authorities had the activities of nurseries and schools suspended on Sunday, and trains circulate in reduced service.
Hong Kong had raised the alert signal to the T10 level for the last time in the passage of the Super Typhon Saola in 2023. Two people were missing in the Philippines after the Wipha pass, according to local authorities.
