Five German climbers, including a 17-year-old girl, died in an avalanche caused this Saturday, November 1, near the summit of Cima Vertana in Trentino-Alto Adige, in northern Italy, the Italian alpine rescue services reported.

The avalanche, which broke out in the early afternoon, affected two groups of German mountaineers who were ascending the Ortles massif in northern Italy, not far from the Swiss border.

“The first group, consisting of three people, was completely buried under the snow” and all three climbers died, Italian alpine rescue services said.

Searches made difficult by the weather

In the second group, made up of four people, two climbers who had managed to take refuge survived.

The lifeless bodies of the last two people still missing, a father and his 17-year-old daughter, were found on Sunday morning, added the Italian Alpine rescue service, whose searches were made difficult by worsening weather conditions.

The two people had been “dragged down the ravine where the avalanche occurred,” they added.
