The Catalan Joseph Borrel, vice president of the European Commission and current head of Foreign Relations and Security of the EU, was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain in the government of Pedro Sánchez and was always against the independence of Catalonia. He even led and spoke at anti-independence demonstrations in Barcelona.
However, in this referendum, held last Sunday, of the approximately 3,000 inhabitants of La Pobla de Segur, only 322 went to the polls, representing 12%. Of these, 250 voted in favor of changing the name of the street named after Joseph Borrell to Rua 1 de Outubro, the day the Catalan independence referendum was held in 2017. 64 wanted the name to be kept.
The mayor of La Pobla de Segur stresses that this consultation on his land is not binding, and that the process must still be referred to the regional government for a final decision. But independence ideas are still very present in the region. “That, always,” he says, laughing. “Before, the Iberian Peninsula had a single king and, if today Portugal is independent, why not Catalonia?”, He asks himself.
