“I don’t want to think about it”: testifies a young Russian mobilized by the army

Olesya Yanho, a Russian anesthesiologist, was arrested in Moscow during a demonstration against the mobilization. She might be forced to go to the Ukraine.

She is one of those Russians facing an important choice. Olesya Yanho, a Russian anesthesiologist, told BFMTV how she was forced to consider going to war in Ukraine against her will.

The young woman was arrested during a demonstration in Moscow on Wednesday. She claims that she was just walking through the staging area.

“People chanted… I can’t say everything because I’m still in Russia, but the most common slogans were ‘no war’, ‘no mobilization’, ‘Putin in the trenches,'” he explains on BFMTV.

After spending 4 hours at the police station, where his phone was confiscated, he received a summons linked to the partial mobilization announced on Wednesday by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Olesya Yanho is not the only one in this case: the NGO OVD-Info reports that several people arrested on Wednesday have received summonses to go to military enlistment centers.

The announcement of a partial mobilization provoked an influx of Russians wishing to leave the country, without figures being available. On Wednesday night, more than 1,300 people were arrested during impromptu anti-mobilization demonstrations across Russia, according to OVD-Info.

She can’t bring herself to tell her parents about it.

Olesya Yanho says that on Thursday she was called to a “military police station” but did not show up. She still doesn’t know if she will respond to this call for mobilization: “It’s a very difficult decision, I don’t want to think about it.”

The young woman does not even dare to talk about it with her parents.

“There is a generation gap. Many Russian parents watch propaganda on TV and have a different reading of what is happening right now than young people,” he said.

If she accepts, she hopes to find herself on the front line for her work as an anesthesiologist: “we are used to treating traumas, bloodshed.” According to the young woman, her summons specifies “you will be directed according to your training.”
