War in Ukraine: kyiv brigade, attacked last week, vows to return to combat

“When our Bradleys are repaired, we will return” to the front, say soldiers from the 47th Brigade of the Ukrainian army, which was attacked on Wednesday during an offensive southeast of Zaporizhia.

Ukrainian troops whose US-made Bradley armored vehicles were damaged or destroyed in an assault on Russian positions last week vowed on Sunday to resume fighting soon.

A group of Ukrainian Bradley fighting vehicles backed by German-made Leopard tanks came under fire Wednesday as the 47th Brigade launched an offensive southeast of Zaporizhia.

Images of the ambush, provided by drones and broadcast on Russian propaganda channels, showed several vehicles hit.

“We still have this fury”

A group of Ukrainian soldiers taking a break outside the small town of Orikhiv in the southern Zaporizhia region said they lost most of their Bradleys. Of the nine vehicles attached to the group’s mechanized infantry unit (not the only one involved in the offensive) six were destroyed, three were damaged but repairable, and one was uninjured.

Asked about the success or otherwise of the offensive, a Ukrainian soldier indicated that his battalion had recaptured a very small portion of the territory.

“When our Bradleys are fixed, we will return,” said another Ukrainian soldier.

“We still have this rage, and we have no choice but to succeed,” a soldier said on condition of anonymity.

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that “defensive and counteroffensive actions” are taking place on the front line with Russia, but Kiev refrains from giving details about its strategy.

Brigade 47 is one of the newly created units, endowed with equipment provided by the West.
