A total of 292 people died on the roads of mainland France in September 2023, 9% more than the same month of the previous year (267 deaths), Road Safety announced on Monday.
This increase in road mortality occurs after nine consecutive months of decline. These are mainly motorists.
“We note in particular a 20% increase in the number of deaths of motorists and a stability in the number of deaths involving motorized two-wheeled vehicles and bicycles,” detailed the National Interministerial Observatory for Road Safety (ONISR) in a press release. .
In total, the number of road safety-related injuries recorded by law enforcement was 4,896 in September 2023, or 5% more than in September 2022.
No more serious two-wheeler injuries
The number of seriously injured also increased by 10%, reaching 1,585 in September 2023, ONISR said.
“The increase in the number of serious injuries in September mainly affects users of motorized two-wheeled vehicles,” notes the Observatory.
In the last three months, the number of deaths has reduced by 3% and the number of seriously injured remains stable, underlines the ONISR.
On overseas roads, the September toll amounted to 15 people killed (-25% compared to September 2022) and 335 injured (-5%).
