Renault says that the Dacia Spring will “probably” lose its ecological bonus

Produced in China, the cheapest electric car currently on the French market should “probably” lose its bonus with the application of the environmental score, said Renault’s financial director.

Will the Dacia Spring continue to benefit from the ecological bonus? This is the question that has been raised for several months and the Government’s desire to link the allocation of the main aid for the purchase of an electric car to an “environmental score”. Currently, this allows the Primavera to be priced at 15,800 euros, deducting a bonus of 5,000 euros.

The answer to whether or not the bonus will be maintained will be on December 15, with the publication of the list of eligible models by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, after studying the files that can be presented from the beginning of October to a state agency. .

Loss of “probable” bonus

According to their criteria, this score would in fact exclude models produced in China, such as the Dacia Spring. Logically, the Minister of Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier Runacher, pointed out that this model, like the MG4, would probably lose this bonus. But the doubt persists, with some exceptions in the case of small models, such as the Spring, although Dacia’s owner, the Renault group, has no illusions.

“It is too early to know exactly the impact the French green bond will have, but Spring is likely to lose its bond,” the French group’s chief financial officer Thierry Piéton said during a conference call to discuss the third quarter. results.

An avalanche of “Chinese” models in the short term?

It also underlines the perverse effect that this significant change can have for the French bond, with an incentive to buy models that would lose it starting next December 15. Without price adjustment by Dacia, the Spring would increase by 5,000 euros in less than two months.

“In the short term, this has a positive impact on the brand, we have many sales of Dacia Spring. The team is working hard on costs to compensate for this, the Spring remains a very competitive car,” underlined Thierry Piéton.

It is difficult to see at the moment whether this avalanche of Chinese models will be confirmed by the end of the year: in September, the Tesla Model Y (which still produces almost a third of the volumes in China), the Dacia Spring and the MG4. They were in the top 5 sales in France.

A spring in top form, with a restyling on the way

“The Dacia Spring recorded nearly 16,000 sales in Europe in the third quarter of 2023,” says Renault’s results release, recalling that this model is on the podium of electric vehicles sold to private customers in Europe.

“We have sold 44,000 cars since the year, which represents a growth of 40%, it is an enormous progression this year,” explained the director of the Dacia brand, Denis Le Vot, during a press conference on Thursday morning.

In the short term, the Primavera would only lose its advantage in France and Dacia foresees a good maintenance of sales in Europe next year, in particular with a stylistic facelift planned for the beginning of next year.

“We are working on the launch of a new Dacia Spring at the end of the first quarter of 2024, a new version of this model and this will increase volumes. I repeat, in Europe the car is doing very well, we are on the podium.” sales of electric vehicles,” detailed Denis Le Vot.

Launched at the beginning of 2021, the Spring will in fact arrive mid-race at the beginning of next year, which is usually the occasion for the marketing of a new version, which brings certain improvements or new options.
