Gasoline shortage: the French resort to carpooling

Some platforms dedicated to daily carpooling have seen an influx of requests from panicked motorists over fuel shortages since last weekend.

Despite government pressure, difficulties in finding gasoline in France are likely to continue. Especially since the CGT has renewed the strikes at the TotalEnergies and Esso-ExxonMobil refineries.

Going to work by car is beginning to be a feat and many employees are looking for alternative solutions (especially since scarcity is not a valid excuse for not going to work). Among them, the shared car.

BlaBlaCar and its Daily service (daily trips) thus register an increase of 25% (this Monday compared to Monday of last week) in searches for shared trips in its application.

Less offer because more telecommuting

A call for solidarity to respond to all requests “In the past, carpooling has already proven to be an effective solution to transport disruptions. To respond to the influx of searches on BlaBlaCar, today we launch a call for solidarity of the drivers who travel to offer their available seats in carpooling”, explains Adrien Tahon, Director France BlaBlaCar.

“It is still a bit early to make a precise quantified assessment, however we point out some figures that illustrate that there is a peak of activity at the beginning of the week”, adds Tom Attias, responsible for development at Karos, the specialized application by shared car home-work.

“This weekend we saw an “abnormal” spike in activity on our app with new subscriber volume 34% higher than our weekend average,” he continues.

“At 8am, we had over 45% more people making their first carpool compared to last Monday,” says Tom Attias.

“The increase in carpooling linked to shortages is simultaneously masked by the decrease linked to motorists who will be able to opt for teleworking. This is a phenomenon that we have already observed during transport strikes”, clarifies, however, the manager.
