A total of 308 people died in a traffic accident in mainland France in October 2023, an increase of 4% compared to the same month of the previous year (297 deaths), Road Safety announced this Thursday, November 16.
This is the second consecutive month that an increase in road mortality has been recorded, after nine months of decline.
An 8% increase in total accidents
The number of seriously injured remains stable in one year, standing at 1,468 in October, detailed the National Interministerial Observatory for Road Safety (ONISR) in a press release.
The police recorded 5,127 traffic accidents, 8% more than in October 2022.
“If road mortality decreased by 6% in the first 10 months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, it has increased in the last 2 months. This must demand our collective attention. Therefore, I recommend to all users to be more cautious.” during this end of the year traditionally marked by more unfavorable weather and light conditions,” commented Florence Guillaume, interministerial delegate for road safety.
“Law enforcement agencies recorded 274 traffic accidents abroad, an increase of +6% compared to the same period last year,” the road safety statement also notes, with 17 dead and 363 injured.
