Electric car: towards a reduced bonus for the richest drivers in 2024

Next year, the ecological bonus will increase from 5,000 to 4,000 euros for half of the richest households, according to information from Les Echos and AFP. The most modest, however, will continue to benefit from a bonus increased to 7,000 euros.

An even more specific ecological bonus. According to information from Les Echos and AFP, the ecological bonus granted to the richest households (from the 6th decile) for the purchase of an electric car should increase from 5,000 to 4,000 euros next year, that is, a drop of 1,000 euros.

However, there are no changes for more modest homes. They will continue to benefit from an increased bonus of 7,000 euros.

A smaller bonus for the richest?

Therefore, after introducing an environmental score, the government is evolving the bonus further. Bruno Le Maire mentioned the idea of a multi-amount bonus as soon as the Finance bill was introduced at the start of the school year. Bercy then mentioned a scale of the ecological bonus “better differentiated and decreasing depending on household income”, Capital magazine reported in particular, and the minister also mentioned an increase in the bonus for the most modest households.

It is clear that the situation has changed somewhat, in a complicated budgetary context, although the Government denies it. If the richest drivers see the amount of their bonus reduced, it does not seem likely that the bonus for the most modest will change. In this context, the aid of 1,000 euros for the purchase of a used electric vehicle should also be eliminated, Les Echos also reports. A decree must definitively confirm these amounts in the coming days.

Better targeting of aid for the purchase of electric cars

Should we conclude that the government no longer wants to support the purchase of zero-emission cars as much? The equation is not that simple. The ecological bonus is clearly a victim of its success: electric models represent 20% of new vehicle sales. This forced the government this year to grant an extension of 400 million euros. Therefore, the dedicated budget line in 2023 will amount to 1.7 billion euros, compared to the 1.4 billion initially planned. And next year, the announced allocation is 1.5 billion euros.

Therefore, the government is reorienting its aid mainly towards those who have the most difficulty changing vehicles. Thus, the ecological bonus of 7,000 euros will serve as the basis for the social lease at 100 euros. Additionally, with a bonus conditional on an environmental score, the government has restricted the number of vehicles eligible for the bonus. If they are not produced in Europe, these models will no longer be able to benefit from this State aid.
