A motorist will no longer risk losing a point if he exceeds the authorized speed limit by a few kilometres. Excess speed of less than 5 kilometers/hour, which was previously punishable by the withdrawal of one point on the driving license and a fixed fine of between 68 and 135 euros, will only be punished with a fine from Monday, January 1, 2024.
A measure of “responsibility” and “common sense” according to the Minister of the Interior, Gérard Darmanin, referring to the French “for whom the car is essential on a daily basis.”
12.5 million fines
The one point reduction on the license now only applies to speeding violations between 5 kilometers/hour and 20 kilometers/hour. Throughout 2020, of the 12.5 million fines sent for speeding controlled by radars, 58% of them referred to speeds of less than 5 kilometers/hour, according to the Ministry of Defense.
This tolerance for small violations of speeding had previously been described as “nonsense” by the League Against Road Violence. A total of 3,267 people died on the roads of mainland France in 2022, according to a consolidated Road Safety report, a stable level (+0.7%) compared to 2019, the last reference year before the pandemic.
