An unusual story that could serve as an unexpected but very useful example of the use of electric vehicles. During the year-end holidays, Australia had to deal with several power outages, which plunged some cities into total darkness. The cause is the intense heat that the country-continent has suffered in recent weeks.
During one episode of this type, a mother found herself unable to connect her 11-year-old son’s dialysis machine to the electrical grid, so she used her electric car.
A giant ad from BYD, Tesla’s rival
This was possible thanks to the characteristics of the car in question, a BYD Atto 3. The Chinese manufacturer that is in the news right now, for its performance in the electric vehicle sector, positioning itself as one of Tesla’s great rivals.
According to the English newspaper The Guardian, the son of this Queensland resident is waiting for a kidney transplant. Therefore, he must perform dialysis daily:
“We plugged the machine into the car, we only needed it for one night. We could also have used it for at least four nights before needing to charge it.”
Electric vehicles as a source of energy in times of disaster
This Australian family didn’t stop there and took advantage of their Atto 3 to spend a night at the movies. A fantastic advertisement from BYD, showing the capabilities of an electric vehicle to be useful indirectly, especially during power outages caused by natural disasters.
As Business Insider reports, in 2022, when Florida was hit hard by Hurricane Ian, Ford saw a 127% increase in the number of people using the capacity of its electric F-150 Lightnings as an external power source. At Tesla, the Cybertruck offers such functionality.
