Fuel prices start the year on the decline. Diesel lost 2.1 cents last week and stood at 1.7278 euros per liter on average in France. For its part, unleaded gasoline 95-E10 lost 1 cent, to 1.7715 euros per liter, according to the weekly report of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, with prices as of Friday, January 5.
After the sharp increase in the summer and the start of the 2023 school year, diesel has returned to its lowest level since the end of July. In the case of gasoline, we finally see a drop after three consecutive weeks of increases.
This drop can be explained by the drop in the price of crude oil. Last week, a barrel of North Sea Brent was trading at $76.7, or $3.4 less than the previous week.
Despite the tensions in the Middle East and the Red Sea, the price of a barrel of crude oil currently maintains a downward trend, in a context of stagnation in global economic growth. A downward trend further reinforced by today’s decision by Saudi Arabia, which reduced the price of its flagship product for its Asian customers to the lows of November 2021.
