Bicycle bonus: what you need to know before buying a new or used model

From January 1, 2024, the bicycle bonus no longer refers only to new bicycles. This assistance also allows you to purchase a second-hand bicycle. You will only have to buy it from a professional seller. An opportunity to remind you how this help works.

Who can benefit from the bicycle bonus?

In addition to being of legal age, this aid can only be obtained under income conditions. To benefit from it, you must have declared a tax income of no more than 14,089 euros. An exception for people with disabilities who must prove their situation.

Exceptions are people who benefit from the disabled adult subsidy (AAH), the disability compensation subsidy (PCH), the increase for independent living (MVA), the education subsidy for disabled children (AEEH), or who are holders of the mobility inclusion card with the mention “disability”, or the disability card, or a military disability card: the condition of very low tax income does not apply to them.

Which bikes are affected?

With the exception of “speed bicycles” which must be registered, all bicycles are eligible for the bonus whether they are muscular, assisted, folding, cargo or equipped for people with disabilities. But whether they are new or used, they must have been purchased from a professional seller.

Electrically assisted models should not be equipped with a lead-acid battery. The motor must have a maximum continuous power of 0.25 kilowatts and will stop when the vehicle reaches 25 km/h, or if the cyclist stops pedaling). Beyond this faculty, they must be registered like all mopeds.

Steps to follow

The request must be made within six months of purchasing the bicycle with a supporting invoice. This process is done online on the site primealaconversion.gouv.fr.

The bonus amount

The amount of the bonus amounts to 40% of the acquisition cost within the limits detailed on the website of the Ministry of Economy:

  • €150 for a muscle bike for a natural person whose tax income is less than or equal to 6,358 euros or for a person with a disability.
  • €300 for an electrically assisted bicycle with a tax income less than or equal to 14,089 euros.
  • €400 for a bicycle with electric assistance with a tax income less than or equal to 6,358 euros or for a person with a disability.
  • 1,000 euros for cargo bicycles designed to transport people or goods behind or in front of the driver or to meet the needs of people with disabilities. The same goes for folding bicycles (with or without pedal assistance) and electric trailers. Tax income less than or equal to 14,089 euros or per legal entity.
  • 2,000 euros for cargo bicycles designed to transport people or goods behind or in front of the driver or to meet the needs of people with disabilities. The same goes for folding bicycles (with or without pedal assistance) and electric trailers. Tax income less than or equal to 6,358 euros or per person with disabilities.
