Highways at 80km/h, highways at 110: what a saving for motorists

According to a study by Astarès, moving to 80 km/h on two-way roads and 110 km/h on motorways would allow an average annual saving of 149 euros per household.

If the reduction of speed on the roads was decided to reduce the number of accidents, it also allows, in theory, reductions in fuel consumption and, therefore, a gain in purchasing power for households. Hence his return to public debate in recent weeks.

The firm Astarès has calculated the potential gain from a general passage of 80 km/h on two-way roads and 110 km/h on motorways. This reduction in speed limits would allow an average annual saving of 149 euros per household, or a gain of 0.3% in purchasing power.

And to explain: “On average, 31% of the distances traveled by the cars of the French are on the highway. Astarès postulated an identical consumption per kilometer on the highway and on the rest of the roads (higher average speed on the highway, but less acceleration or braking) Going from an average speed of 130 to 110 km/h allows a fuel saving of 25%”.

25% fuel economy on the highway

“Thus, French households, which spend an average of 500 euros a year on motorway fuel consumption, would achieve an average annual saving of around 125 euros. With an average disposable income of around 38,000 euros per household in 2022, a saving of 125 euros represents a gain in purchasing power of around 0.3%”, continues Astarès.

“The speed limit of 80 km/h on roads in both directions would generate an annual saving of 24 euros per household, that is, a gain of 0.1% of purchasing power. On average, 30% of the distances traveled by car by the French are two-way roads (outside built-up areas) The limitation of the maximum authorized speed allows a fuel saving of 5% (the speed being lower than that of the motorway, the saving of fuel is less important). Thus, French households achieve an average annual saving of around 24 euros, that is, a gain in purchasing power of around 0.1%”, it can be read.

Remember that the LOM (Loi d’Orientation des Mobilités) law, enacted at the end of 2019, now authorizes departments to repeal the speed limit rule on their secondary roads and return to 90 km / h instead of 80 km / h. H. To date, more than 40 departments have returned in this way.
