Road safety: signaling for cyclists extends to electric scooters

Electric scooter users must now abide by the same rules as cyclists on the road.

The same rights and duties for everyone. Signs and lights intended for cyclists now apply to drivers of electric scooters, according to a decree published in the Official Gazette on March 23.

Specifically, drivers of motorized vehicles for transporting people (EDPM), such as electric scooters with or without a seat, gyropods or even gyro wheels, must respect the prohibition of traffic signs intended for cyclists and traffic lights that contain figures on bicycles.

Users of electric scooters must also travel on the mandatory lanes or cycle paths and comply with the two-way cycling signs. They now also benefit from the authorization to cross a traffic light provided by the “give way to cyclists at the traffic light” sign, which allows them to take the direction indicated by the arrow even if the traffic light is red.

too many accidents

Given the increase in deaths related to electric scooter accidents in recent years, the government presented a national regulation plan last year.

Since September, it is necessary to be at least 14 years old to drive an electric scooter, compared to the previous 12, and fines for riding with two people on the same machine or on prohibited roads have increased from 35 to 135 euros.
