Overspeed alert, black box and drowsiness warning: these equipment will soon be mandatory in new cars

Our cars will soon be increasingly equipped with cameras and sensors for our safety. Around thirty new equipment will be mandatory this summer on all new cars, in accordance with European regulations.

A small beep, a small flashing signal on the dashboard or a movement on the steering wheel. All these small alerts will multiply in vehicles during the coming months. In fact, as of July 7, around thirty new safety equipment will be mandatory in all new vehicles, in application of EU Regulation No. 2019/2144 GSR II (“Global Safety Regulation” II).

Among these new mandatory equipment, we mention a black box, officially called “event data recorder”, an over-speed alert with signal reading, a fatigue and drowsiness detector, a lane crossing alert or even cruise control. adaptive and pre-speed. Installation of an alcohol immobilizer, as specified by the European Parliament. Specific equipment will also be mandatory for vans.

Lack of attention, speed.

After a first stage of the GSR in 2009, where the emphasis was placed rather on how to minimize the consequences of accidents, the GSR II goes one step further by emphasizing the fight against distractions and speed, with the objective of this time , Avoid accidents as much as possible. Certain equipment, such as the black box, should also allow a better understanding of the mechanisms of an accident to better prevent it. The data from this black box will be anonymized and then used by accident laboratories in Europe.

With GSR II, the European Union hopes to save 25,000 lives by 2038, as part of its goal of zero road deaths by 2050. In 2022, 20,640 people died on European roads. For road safety experts, this new regulation could have a significant influence, such as the arrival of mandatory seat belts or the generalization of speed radars in France. “The Commission has dealt a hard blow,” explains a specialist in road safety issues at a major manufacturer.

The text from the European authorities also highlights the acceptability of the different warnings, so that drivers are not tempted to deactivate everything. Although certain equipment such as the lane change warning or the “beep” overspeed warning can be deactivated by the driver, they will be active again every time you start.

Towards an increase in new car prices?

Will the GSR II increase the price of new cars? Difficult to quantify, explains a UTAC specialist, because everything depends on the presence of this equipment previously in a manufacturer’s range, on negotiations with suppliers or even on the possibility of grouping purchases in a group. Most of this soon-to-be-mandatory equipment is usually already present on higher-end models.

Will the possible price increase then focus only on small models? Dacia assured us a few weeks ago, for example, that it would do everything possible to limit additional costs. As this new regulation affects all new models, manufacturers have accelerated the end of the career of some models, such as the Renault Zoé or the Suzuki Ignis, Auto Infos points out, which are too expensive to adapt to the standard.
