Autonomous driving has become a reality in recent years, especially with Tesla vehicles, but the technology is still fallible. A new accident that could have been dramatic proves this once again.
In the United States, a video captured by an on-board camera shows a Tesla Model 3 in 100% automatic mode driving directly towards a moving train, despite the presence of barriers and light signals at a level crossing.
The driver was able to regain control of the vehicle at the last moment and escaped in great fear and with the body heavily damaged.
Judicial investigation in progress
Still, Tesla’s full self-driving (FSD) system, supposedly capable of handling complex situations on the road; he asks again after this incident. Especially since the light signals should have prompted the system to reduce the speed of the vehicle or even stop it.
Enough to fuel the investigation carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the US Department of Justice (DOJ), which are examining complaints of “false advertising” related to these technologies.
Because this is not the first accident involving the Tesla system. In 2016, the owner of a Tesla Model S died while his car was driving in autonomous mode.
A driver died in 2019 after his Model 3 turned right on a freeway near Los Angeles, hit a tree and caught fire. According to survivors, the computer had caused the car to leave the road without the possibility of regaining control.
