The French market for new passenger cars fell by 2.9% in May compared to May 2023, according to statistics published on Saturday by manufacturers. Last month, 141,298 registrations of new passenger cars were registered (of which 17% were electric), which represents a decrease of 2.9% in raw data compared to May 2023 (which had the same number of working days), according to the Automotive Platform (PFA). which brings together French equipment manufacturers and suppliers.
However, with 31,000 registrations, the market for new light utility vehicles (less than 5.1 tonnes) grew by 2.3%. In total for these two categories, the new light vehicle market experienced a 2% drop in May.
10% drop for the Stellantis group
However, thanks in particular to the months of January and February, the market for new light vehicles increased by 5.6% in the first five months of the year compared to the same period last year. In total, more than 894,000 were registered, of which 82% were passenger cars. In the first five months of the year, the passenger car market registered a year-on-year increase of 4.90%, with 733,178 registrations.
Registrations of new cars from the Stellantis group, which includes the Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel brands, fell 10.08% last month compared to the previous year. The Renault group (Renault, Dacia and Alpine brands) saw its registrations in France fall by 4.73% in annual rate in May.
