Carmaker Tesla on Wednesday announced a price increase of around 1,500 euros for its Model 3 in European countries including Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, after Brussels imposed additional customs duties on electric vehicles made in China.
Tesla, which makes its Model 3 in Shanghai and is China’s top exporter of electric vehicles, warned last month that it could raise its prices because of the decision, which the European Commission says is aimed at protecting European carmakers from unfair competition from China.

The customs duties, which are provisional until the Commission’s final decision expected in November, could reach 37.6% according to the carmaker.
Tesla was classified as cooperating in the EU investigation into subsidies to Chinese industry and therefore received a reduced tariff of 20.8%, but requested a recalculation, according to the Commission.
German manufacturer BMW has also asked Brussels to reduce customs duties on its Chinese-made electric Mini, which is currently subject to the highest tariffs, to 20.8%.
