In June 2024, 291 people died on the roads of mainland France, an increase of 2% compared to the same month last year (286), Road Safety announced in a press release on Friday. The number of serious injuries (1,519) has decreased by 12% compared to June 2023, according to estimates by the National Interministerial Observatory of Road Safety.
The Road Safety Department highlights a “sharp increase” in deaths of passenger vehicle users with 145 deaths, or 26 more than in June 2023, but also of pedestrians, with 33 deaths (+5 deaths compared to June 2023 to June 2023). The statement highlights a drop in mortality among users of two-wheeled motor vehicles, cyclists and minors under 18 years of age.
Fatigue and lack of attention are often involved in accidents.
Given these estimates and the period of “major holiday trips”, the interministerial delegate for Road Safety, Florence Guillaume, calls for caution in the face of “fatigue and lack of attention”, which she believes are “involved in too many accidents on motorways”.
He therefore encourages motorists to pay “the utmost attention to professionals who work on the roadsides to secure or maintain the roads” and who are “all too often run over”.
Overall, mortality in the past 12 months has increased by 5% compared to the previous 12 months. Three modes of transport have seen their figures increase in the past year: pedestrian mortality (+11%), mortality on motorised two-wheeled vehicles (+6%) and mortality on “personal transport vehicles” (electric scooters, etc.) which has increased significantly (+36%).
Abroad, the number of accidents with injuries (268) has increased slightly (+1% compared to June 2023). On the other hand, the statement reports a decrease in the number of deaths compared to June 2023, with 13 deaths (-35%).
