A group of lawyers has filed a complaint against My Leo, a collective legal action platform, with six plaintiffs now forming part of the group of consumers, Christophe Lèguevaques, one of the lawyers in charge of the case, told Reuters.
The crimes being prosecuted include “endangering the lives of others, deception and questionable business practices,” he said.
Airbags from the Takata Group, which filed for bankruptcy in 2017, pose a safety risk when in use because the chemicals they contain can deteriorate when exposed to hot, humid weather conditions.
More than 30 dead and 400 injured attributed to these defective airbags
According to June figures, more than 30 deaths – including 27 in the United States – and more than 400 injuries have been attributed to these airbags.
In France, they are notably used on Citroën, DS and Opel models from the Stellantis group, which launched a major “stop drive” recall campaign in May involving 500,000 Citroën C3s and DS3s manufactured between 2009 and 2019 and located in 24 different countries in Southern Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
In June, the group also launched a less restrictive “preventive recall measure” for the Citroen C4, DS4 and DS5, as well as Opel models. Reuters was not immediately able to contact Stellantis.
The number of complainants will continue to evolve, while more than 1,350 people have registered on My Leo to take part in the collective action, said Christophe Lèguevaques.
