New car registrations slowed in France in July (-2.26%), according to figures published by manufacturers on Thursday. At the beginning of summer, 126,036 cars were registered, a clear year-on-year decrease despite three additional working days during the month.
July 2023 confirmed the recovery of car sales after months of shortage of electronic components, but has since remained at a low level. During the first seven months of 2024, registrations increased by 2.18% to 1.04 million units.
French manufacturers are not keeping up with their competitors
Market leader Stellantis saw a slight increase in July (+2.58%) thanks to its Peugeot brand, but has remained stable since the beginning of the year.
The Renault Group recorded a clear decline (-7.86%) in July, but remained stable over the first seven months of the year, with Dacia’s decline offset by that of its main brand. The Volkswagen Group has been on the rise since the beginning of 2024 (+7.02%) thanks to Skoda, Seat and Porsche. BMW-Mini is also making progress (+6.01%), but less than Toyota (+29.36%), driven by its sales of hybrid models.
