Driving licence: success rate is decreasing despite reforms

Among the more than 1.5 million applicants for a B licence last year, 55.9% obtained one. This is a lower rate than in previous years, despite reforms that should make it easier to obtain one.

For some people, it is always difficult to get a driving licence. Of the more than 1.55 million applicants for a B licence last year, only 55.9% of candidates obtained it according to Road Safety figures analysed by Auto Plus. A downward trend compared to the previous two years, with a 56.8% success rate in 2022 and 58.4% in 2021, despite the reforms introduced to facilitate access to a licence in France.

The royal road to accompanied driving

Among other lessons, the success rate remains higher for students in accompanied driving within the framework of the AAC (advance learning driving). 74.7% of them have obtained it, a figure stable compared to 2022. But only 16.7% of candidates opt for this route to obtain their license. A rate that could decrease even further with the 17-year-old license, implemented since the beginning of the year: very young candidates, in fact, would move away from this royal road by opting for the classic license.

Another observation is that the success rate varies from department to department, from 38% in Guadeloupe to 72% in Lozère. The latter department is a good example of the disparities that can be found in France: two of the neighbouring departments have much lower rates: 53.9% in Aveyron and 48% in Cantal.

That’s why it’s so important to get good information before choosing where to train in driving. Our ranking of the best driving schools makes it easy to check the ratings of establishments near you.

Lowest scores in Ile-de-France

In mainland France, Val-de-Marne has the worst score, with just 43.1%. Rates also remain quite low in Ile-de-France, with an average of 51%.

“The more populated the regions, the more the proportion of successful candidates falls,” underlines Auto Plus, with success rates above average in Brittany, Corsica, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Pays de la Loire.

Although the results remain fairly stable from one year to the next, the magazine reports several major variations: Haute-Corse, Vendée and Sarthe see their success rates increase. On the other hand, these success rates collapse in Guadeloupe, French Guiana and Hérault.
