A record that is only getting better. In July, 278 people lost their lives on the roads of mainland France, the Road Safety Agency has just announced. This represents a 9% decrease compared to the 306 deaths recorded in July 2023, the organisation details in a press release.
Positive results for those over 65 years of age
The decline is particularly marked among drivers of passenger cars (-31 deaths) and users of personal motor vehicles (PMVs), such as scooters (-9 deaths). On the other hand, mortality is increasing among users of two-wheeled motor vehicles (+12 deaths) and cyclists (+3 deaths).
By age category, the results remain positive for those over 65 (-12 deaths) and those under 18 (-10 deaths).
Serious injuries increase by 5%
Despite these encouraging figures, the number of accidents with injuries increased by 8%, with 4,819 cases recorded in July.
As a result, the number of serious injuries increased quite significantly, with 1,687 people in July, an increase of 5% compared to the same month in 2023. This increase mainly affects pedestrians (148 injured, +18%), cyclists (334 injured, +12%) and EDPM users (68 injured, +7%). The number of injuries on motorized two-wheeled vehicles has also decreased, by 2%.
Abroad, road safety recorded 15 deaths in July, 12% less, and 354 injuries, a decrease of 4%.
