Smart presents a new electric SUV, the largest model in its range

The brand owned by Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese giant Geely has just presented the third model in its electric range, the #5, which is 4.70 metres long, close to the Renault Espace, Peugeot 5008 and Tesla Model Y.

As far as it seems, it is the first small Smart with its 2.50 metres in length. The brand, now owned by a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese giant Geely, has just presented the third model of its 100% electric range, with a new milestone reached in its evolution.

The number 5 (pronounced “hashtag 5”) that has just been revealed shows a length of 4.70 metres. An SUV that is therefore close to models such as the Renault Espace, the Peugeot 5008 or the Tesla Model Y. It is not really what we could have imagined a few years ago as a future model from the former specialist in micro-urban cars.

Smart continues to grow: after its number 1 model with a length of 4.27 metres and the SUV-coupé version of this model, the number 3, with a length of 4.40 metres.

A very “versatile”, family and adventurous model

The brand is obviously presenting this new model as the most versatile in its history. This applies to the space offered on board (with a wheelbase of 2.90 metres we can even speak of a family vehicle), but also to the possibility of travelling off the beaten track. One of the two models presented has the appearance of a true adventurer, with a light bar and luggage rack.

Smart also took the opportunity to highlight two recent collaborations concluded with brands geared towards “outdoor sports”, American bicycles Trek and a German specialist in equipment such as tents and backpacks, Heimplanet.

With a commercial launch expected only at the end of 2025, Smart has not yet given all the details.

The boot volume has not been announced but should be quite substantial. With the seat folded down it should reach 1,530 litres, says Auto Plus, with a “frunk” (a trunk in front under the bonnet) of 72 litres.

On the other hand, this #5 would not offer a seven-seat version, unlike its technical cousin, the Mercedes EQB. Perhaps we will have to wait for a future #7 to increase the number of passengers?

Autonomy to be confirmed

In terms of electricity, it is worth noting that this model will be offered with a 100 kWh battery. The range is given with the Chinese CLTC standard, which is a priori quite “generous” with 740 kilometres announced. We can count on an official range of up to 600 kilometres in Europe.

We will also have to be patient to see how powerful the electric motors are, although we can be quite optimistic given the off-road ambitions shown.

The announced 800-volt architecture promises very fast charging times, between 10 and 80% in 15 minutes.

A very technological interior

As we saw in point 1, this new Smart also relies heavily on on-board technologies.

The future #5 impresses here, with a 10.3-inch ultra HD screen and a duo of 2.5K Amoled screens, in the center and for the passenger, with a combined surface area of 25.6 inches.

We will also be able to count on a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display to find information directly on the windshield.

Smart also promises plenty of connected features, including “an advanced voice assistant with generative AI,” a big trend right now.

More anecdotally, after the little fox that captivated us in #1, “a new lion-like avatar will guide users through commands,” the press release notes.

Another unknown is the price: the No. 3 currently starts at 37,000 euros (but is not eligible for the bonus) and the Mercedes EQB starts at 43,000 euros (bonus included).
