“It’s a hard blow”: Luc Chatel disappointed by the announced reduction in the ecological bond

For the president of the PFA, the announced reduction of the ecological bonus represents a bad sign for the French automobile industry. Luc Chatel also calls for emergency measures at European level.

An ecological bond in sharp decline by 2025: the hypothesis should be confirmed this weekend with the publication of a decree. With immediate effect, and not from January 1, on the amount of the main aid for the purchase of a new electric car in France.

“We cut off the reactors, the plane crashes”

An incomprehensible decision for Luc Chatel, president of the Automobile Platform (PFA), which represents the French automobile industry:

“It is not a sledgehammer, it is a sledgehammer, at a time when we want to get the electric car off the ground – and that is the goal of all of us because we are committed to this path -, at a time when the reactors are at maximum . we tilt, we cut the jets and in these cases the plane crashes,” reacted Luc Chatel, guest of Good Evening Business.

“Last year we had 1.5 billion bonuses for the incentive of electric vehicles, this year’s allocation would be 700 million, we divided it by two, it is not a plane,” added the president of the PFA.

Beyond private vehicles, he cites in particular the elimination of subsidies for light electric vehicles “which are produced in France and in which our national manufacturers are quite present on the market.” “It’s a mistake,” said Luc Chatel.

Another criticism is the end of subsidies for company fleets, “one in every two sales and that is good for the young second-hand market.”

A crisis at the European level

In more general terms, Luc Chatel once again referred to the crisis in the automotive sector in Europe, with the current drop in sales, the difficulties linked to the transition to electric and Chinese competition.

“The automobile crisis is entering a new phase, a critical phase, which could call into question its sustainability in Europe,” warns Luc Chatel.

It calls in particular for “the establishment of a European shock for competitiveness, in particular in the automobile industry”, in particular to address the energy crisis.

“We ask for harmonization of aid at intra-community level: we cannot imagine that all new investments in cars in Europe will be made in Eastern Europe, because there is still this difference: if you are Hungarian or Slovak, you have 40 or 50% of the aid European Union, while in France you have 10%. This is not possible, there comes a time when we have to leave everything,” he also mentioned. Luc Chatel.
