The European Union will begin in January the “strategic dialogue” promised by Ursula von der Leyen on the future of the automobile industry, the Commission announced on Thursday, with a view to adopting emergency measures in the face of the crisis.
“We must support this industry in the profound and disruptive transition that is coming and we must ensure that the future of the automobile remains firmly anchored in Europe,” stressed the President of the European Commission.

A multifactorial crisis
European car manufacturers are going through a period of crisis and are struggling to achieve their goals of switching to electric cars. The Commission promises rapid implementation of the “urgent solutions” the sector needs.
In the name of the ecological transition, the EU plans to ban the sale of new thermal vehicles in 2035. Car manufacturers are also gnashing their teeth over the fines they could face if they do not respect CO2 emissions reduction targets from 2025. , the year of the strictest rules.
France, Italy and several European countries increased pressure in Brussels on Tuesday to oppose these possible fines. Registrations of new electric cars in Europe contracted 9.5% in November year-on-year, weighed down by the French and German markets, according to statistics published on Thursday by the manufacturers.
